Planet Patch & Just Change
In June of 2006, Just Food Co-op began the Planet Patch program, where customers receive one Planet Patch (worth 5 cents) for each shopping bag that they reuse. Customers can either cash in 20 Planet Patches for $1 off their purchase or they could choose to donate that Patch to a local environmental, food or agriculture-related initiative or organization chosen by Just Food. By 2011, Just Food Co-op had donated over $1,200 through this program. Recipients have included: Cannon River Watershed Partnership, Mill Towns Trail, RENew Northfield, League of Women Voters, Howard Bowers Fund, Maltby Science Center, Northfield Food Shelf, American P.I.E., Land Stewardship Project, Northfield Community Gardeners.
The Co-op also wanted to provide a way for customers to donate their change to local causes that fit with Just Food’s mission. From October of 2006 until 2011, Co-op shoppers donated over $800 to local causes.
Recipients have included:
The Northfield Union of Youth, Northfield Food Shelf, Northfield Citizens Online, Girl Scouts, Northfield Youth Sports Collaborative.
In February 2011, Just Food decided to focus its community fundraising efforts on an issue of great importance: ensuring that everyone in the community has access to good food. Since then, the Planet Patch and Just Change donations have gone to Everyone Eats, a partnership between the Co-op and the Community Action Center of Northfield (CAC). This program puts the money collected from Just Change and Planet Patch to a variety of uses at the CAC. The mission of the Everyone Eats program is to get more organic, natural, healthy, tasty food to the CAC Food Shelf. Check out our latest edition of The ComPost to see how much of a difference we’ve made together.
We support a healthy, vibrant community. To that end, Just Food donates to many local organizations throughout the year through sponsorships, gifts of products, and financial donations.
