CSA Day is Saturday at Just Food!

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Farms offer the opportunity for eaters to purchase a share of the year’s harvest. Here’s how it works: We, as eaters, purchase that membership in full in the late winter or early spring, and they, as farmers, give us a share of the harvest every week during the growing season. Usually our share of the harvest comes as a basket of veggies each week. If there is a hail storm, or basket might be smaller, and if it’s sunny and we’ve gotten enough rain our basket might be bigger. As members of the farm, we share in the risk, and we share in the bounty.

The price for a membership and the products grown vary from farm to farm. Some farms grow vegetables, some add eggs or honey (or even meat) to the mix. Some farms pick it all for you, and on some you can pick some of your own. You might get to go to the farm each week to pick up your food, or your farm may have a convenient pickup site in town. There are many options, and you’re sure to find the one that fits your needs best.

If you are interested in learning more about the various CSA Farms in the area, I hope you will plan to attend CSA Day at Just Food on Saturday, March 14 from 11-2. At least six local CSA Farmers will be in the aisles of Just Food where you can meet them, ask about their farming practices, see pictures of their fields, and if you are so inclined, join up.
