February is Heart Health Month and we are celebrating at your Co-op! There are many great choices that you can make in the aisles that can help support your goals of keeping your heart healthy – your ticker needs you to take care of it! Just Food has placed, at the point of product, vibrant signage that indicates a heart healthy option that you might want to consider adding to your cart.
While our produce department has indicated a few specific options that are heart health friendly, eating your fruits and veggies is always doing right by your heart! My personal favorite is a delicious colorful green salad (mixed greens and spinach) with raspberries or blueberries, crunchy veggies like red peppers and cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, creamy avocado, heart healthy walnuts from our bulk department, all dressed with balsamic vinegar mixed with avocado oil. It’s so good and so full of good nutrients. You get sweet, crunchy and a little salty all in one little salad and it’s very satisfying!
And folks, chocolate is ON the list of good choices! Dark Chocolate, in moderation, is considered heart healthy. With an abundance of flavonols and it’s ability to act as an antioxidant – it sure sounds like a great reason to have a piece. Are you looking to up your game a bit and still have that chocolate flavor that you crave? Our Co-op also carries Cacao Powder, a superfood and the most pure form of chocolate; it ups the game on Dark Chocolate and is thought to offer the highest levels of antioxidants, as well as being rich in magnesium. Add it into your smoothies or add it to some yogurt with honey for a nice treat.
While it might be ideal to eat all of your nutrients, we know that it is sometimes very hard to eat all of the right things. Our wellness department is here to help fill that gap! With aisles full of heart healthy options, including specialty supplements to specifically support women’s heart health, fish oils and so many more options, you’re sure to find what you are looking for. Our helpful staff are always willing to guide you to choices that fit your needs and your budget, just ask!
