About Us

Welcome!

We’re glad to welcome you to Just Food Co-op in downtown Northfield. We are proud to be your source for fresh, local and organic food, and sustainable household and personal care products. We vow to provide you with excellent customer service, an enjoyable shopping environment, and a wide variety of natural food choices that don’t contain artificial colors or preservatives.

But we’re more than just a grocery store. We’re a co-op, and we’re owned by more than 2,100 of your friends and neighbors. Our owners have invested in this store and participate in its governance. And when we become profitable and have paid back our loans, they will receive a portion of those profits through patronage rebates. Because of this, our profits stay in the local economy. Just Food defines its success by a triple bottom line: social, environmental, and economic sustainability. This commitment to doing business justly is reflected in our name—Just Food. So whether you’d like to buy fair trade, want to support your local farmers, or just like the delicious soup in our deli, you’re voting with your dollar for a better world just by shopping here.

We know good food

Grocery shopping is time consuming enough without reading the label of every product you pick up. At Just Food, we research our products before we put them on the shelf. In our store, you won’t find products with artificial colors or preservatives. You won’t find milk from cattle treated with hormones or meat from animals given antibiotics, and you won’t find high fructose corn syrup or transfats.

What you will find are quality choices. We carry many products that are organic, local or gluten free. For those looking to get more whole grains in their diet, we’ve got breads and pastas made from a wide variety of grains. We carry milk, yogurt and cheese from cows, goats, sheep and soybeans. You can even find a healthier version of your favorite comfort foods, like chicken nuggets, macaroni and cheese, frozen pizza and nacho-flavored tortilla chips. And if you can’t find what you are looking for, our friendly and knowledgeable staff members are always happy to help.

Supporting local farmers

Ever since we opened our doors in 2004, we have supported and promoted local farmers and producers. Between 20-25% of the product we purchase (in dollars) is locally produced food. To make it easier for our customers to buy local, we put a local shelf tag on all products from the five state area. And all of our produce has a country or state of origin label on its tag, so you know where your food is coming from. Each year, we invite our customers to Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Day, where you have the opportunity to meet local CSA farmers and purchase a share in their harvest. We also host an Eat Local Challenge for a month each fall, challenging our customers to eat 80% of their food from the 5-state area for four weeks. These fun events remind us to pay attention to where our food is coming from and build our local foodshed by eating locally when possible.

Education

Part of our mission is to provide education on healthy choices and sustainable living. We hold free or low-cost classes regularly on a variety of topics. Information on upcoming classes can be found by the front door or on our website. The ComPost, our bimonthly newsletter, is another wonderful source of information on food, health and community. Filled with recipes, farmer profiles, wellness information and contributions from community members, The ComPost is mailed directly to our owners and is available free for customers to pick up in the store.

Community

Just Food is deeply rooted in this community. It’s our town, and we feel that it is our responsibility to give back. We regularly support a variety of community organizations and initiatives through donations of dollars or products. Our Planet Patch program and Just Change donation collection boxes, as well as our yearly blood drive, provide ways for our customers to give back too.

To request a donation for your organization, please talk with your cashier or download the donation request form.

Do I have to join to shop at Just Food?

No! Whether you are a member-owner or not, you can expect the same exceptional customer service, quality products and enjoyable shopping experience at Just Food. Of course, you are always welcome to join. After all, there are benefits to ownership.

The benefits of ownership

Our members are actually owners of Just Food. For your one-time investment of $125, our owners enjoy exclusive monthly specials, a 10% discount on case orders, newsletters delivered directly to their homes, voting privileges at annual meetings, patronage rebates when our store becomes profitable, and much more. But the best benefit of becoming an owner is joining the over 2,100 other owner households in supporting a socially responsible local business.
