What is a Co-op?

Our Seven Principles

Just Food Coop was started in 2004 by a small group of dedicated individuals looking to create better access to healthy food for the Northfield community and surrounding areas. Since then, more than 4000 families have invested in the growth of the co-op by becoming members of Just Food. In exchange for these investments, the co-op exists to serve our owners and community members. The more successful we are as a co-op, the more we are about to give back to our owners in the form of patronage.

Cooperatives are guided by the seven internationally cooperative principles. We prioritize these principles over profits and the profits we do accumulate are given back in the form of patronage, to the owners that support us day in and day out.

  1. Voluntary & Open Membership
  2. Democratic Member Control
  3. Member Economic Participation
  4. Autonomy & Independence
  5. Education, Training, & Information
  6. Cooperation Among Cooperatives
  7. Concern for Community
